America was founded as an experiment. From our earliest days, we have led the world in groundbreaking advancements driven by research and development. Whether it was revolutionizing agriculture, pioneering modern manufacturing, or leading the digital age, America has consistently been at the forefront of transformative change. Innovation isn’t just a part of our history—it is the engine of our economy, creating new products, good-paying jobs, and opportunities for hardworking Americans to build a better future for themselves and their families.

That is why I recently joined my colleagues, Reps. Ron Estes (R-Kansas) and John Larson (D-Connecticut), to reintroduce the American Innovation and R&D Competitiveness Act. This critical legislation will help ensure that businesses of all sizes can continue investing in the research and development necessary to keep the United States competitive on the world stage.

For years, U.S. businesses have faced barriers that stifle research and development by preventing them from immediately expensing R&D costs. This has slowed domestic innovation while our global competitors accelerate theirs. America should never take a back seat to its adversaries. We must support the manufacturers, small business owners, and workers who drive our economy forward. Prioritizing them isn’t just good policy—it’s common sense.

Indiana has long been a hub for innovation. From Warsaw, which leads the world in medical device development to boats and RVs in Elkhart, our state—particularly Indiana’s Second District—leads the way in manufacturing excellence. As elected officials, we must empower our constituents, not hold them back. Permanently extending the Research and Development tax credit would provide immediate relief to businesses, fuel job growth, and strengthen our economy. It would reaffirm America’s status as the global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship while ensuring that our workers and businesses have the tools they need to succeed.

Cutting burdensome regulations and red tape is common sense. Supporting our manufacturers, small businesses, and hardworking Hoosiers is common sense. Ensuring America remains the best place to innovate, invest, and do business is common sense. After four years of failed policies and weak leadership, we have work to do—but this is a crucial step in getting America back on track.

I will always fight unapologetically for Hoosiers, our businesses, and America’s future.
