WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02) participated in a Ways and Means Committee markup that advanced nine commonsense bills. Of these nine bills, Rep. Yakym is proud to co-lead one and co-sponsor two others.

“These bills demonstrate our commitment to bettering the lives of Hoosiers by ensuring seniors have timely access to breakthrough medical devices and early cancer detection, clarifying social security benefits, and making government work more efficiently to deliver the care, security, and peace of mind that families deserve,” Rep. Yakym said. “Together they reflect a practical approach to strengthening our healthcare system and safeguarding our most vulnerable citizens.”

Background:

The Claiming Age Clarity Act (H.R. 5284): This bill addresses widespread confusion around Social Security claiming ages, which often leads seniors to make suboptimal financial decisions. The bill directs SSA to replace technical terms like “full retirement age” and “early eligibility age” with clearer language that reflects the real impact on monthly benefits.

The Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act (H.R. 842): This bill, named after Rep. Terri Sewell’s mother, provides Medicare coverage for FDA-approved multi-cancer early detection tests, addressing a critical gap where most cancers in older adults go undetected until late stages. By ensuring timely access, it will help seniors receive early treatment, improving survival rates and reducing long-term healthcare costs.

The Ensuring Patient Access to Critical Breakthrough Products Act (H.R. 5343): This legislation ensures Medicare patients can access FDA-designated breakthrough medical devices without delay, giving hope to individuals with limited or no other treatment options. The bill provides four years of transitional coverage while CMS to make a permanent coverage decision, accelerating access to innovative treatments.

Other bills that passed out of Committee during this markup include:

  • H.R. 4313, “Hospital Inpatient Services Modernization Act”
  • H.R. 5345, the “Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act”
  • H.R. 5346, the “Fair and Accountable IRS Reviews Act”
  • H.R. 5347, “Health Care Efficiency Through Flexibility Act”
  • H.R. 5348, the “Social Security Child Protection Act of 2025”
  • H.R. 5349, the “Tax Court Improvement Act”
